Mission
Angell Street Galleries is a project of 501c3Galleries, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the artistic community of Rhode Island by providing an unjuried and inclusive forum through the development of exhibition, studio, and performance space.
History
Borne out of a love for art and artists, Angell Street Galleries is a multimedia exhibition and meeting space designed as an incubator for collaborative ideas that nurture the artistic community of Rhode Island. Owner Tom Petrosino, Founding Executive Director of 501c3Galleries, the umbrella organization supporting Angell Street puts it this way, “I love art and artists. I love Providence and I love Rhode Island. This is an investment not only for me and my family, but also an investment in the community I wish to serve.” Co-owner of a scrap metal recycling business in Brooklyn, New York, Petrosino fell in love with the area when he dropped off his daughter to attend the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. “The turning point, when I realized that I wanted to enter the art world rather than being just a fan of art, was when I knew that my daughter was going to be an artist. I knew at that moment that I was going to open a gallery in Providence.”
About Us
Nestled into a former dental office on 324 Angell Street in the heart of the Brown University Campus on the East Side of Providence, the roughly 2000 square foot space is divided into seven “Micro Galleries” each of which was a former dental examination room. The galleries surround and branch out from a large common space, formerly the waiting room, which always contains a selection from the currently exhibiting artists’works. One wall area is aptly christened, "The Junkman's Wall," which features works curated by Petrosino for each show, predominantly New York artists. "I'm just a junkman," says Petrosino. The gallery books seven shows per calendar year and the shows run for six weeks. Acting Gallery Director Richard Goulis explains, “I’m thrilled to be involved with this project. I feel Tom’s heart is definitely in the right place and his vision for this space fits my way of working and my personal sensibilities. We are all extremely fortunate to have him as a member of the artistic community of Providence.”The space features state-of-the-art internet streaming, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities, making it ideal for multimedia video installation and electronic works. The space is entirely ADA compliant and has a small parking lot in front of the building that includes an electric car charging station. The space is available for private functions and gatherings.
